Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age drama has remained a landmark in cinema since its cinematic release in 2014. The film became the foremost of linear filmmaking with Linklater filming across 12 years with his endeavour to create a film simply about growing up.
The film stars rising star Ellar Coltrane as six-year-old Mason, the son of Olivia (Patricia Arquette) and Mason Evans Sr. (Ethan Hawke) who are recently divorced. Unable to support Mason and his sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater), Olivia is forced to move her family to Houston, Texas leaving their friends and family along the way. Throughout the next 12 years of his life, Mason deals with issues such as love, loss and adolescent life.
Boyhood was immediately celebrated by viewers and critics alike as one of the best films of all time. The film premiered as part of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and later screened at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival where Linklater won the Silver Bear Award for Best Director. Boyhood went on to receive six Academy Award nominations – including Best Picture and Best Director – and saw Arquette pick up the award for Best Supporting Actress.
